The Federal Trade Commission released its annual list of consumer
complaints for the 2010 calendar year. Identity theft topped the list
with 250,854 complaints, 19 percent of the total reported. Identity
theft has been the top complaint by consumers for 11 consecutive years. Debt collectors took the second spot on the complaint list, with more than 144,000 consumers reporting the collectors as a problem. The third spot on the list was internet services, followed by prize and sweepstakes solicitations. Rounding out the top five were complaints about shop-at-home solicitations.
