You are here: Top Stories Mexican Cartels Chase Sheriff out of Town
Marisol Valles, hailed as the bravest woman in Mexico, and the subject of a Suit feature story in December, has been fired from her post as sheriff of Praxedis G. Guerrero, the site of violent drug activity.  However, it would be more accurate to say that she abandoned her post.  According to AP, she did not show up for work this morning and it is believed that she is seeking asylum in the United States.  Her decision to leave Praxedis was brought on by death threats from the drug cartels.  Even though Valles had been concentrating on community-building activities, and she had not confronted the cartels, she could not prevent their tactics of intimidation.  But after fleeing, she may have difficulty gaining asylum in the U.S., because immigration officials normally require an applicant for asylum to prove a government-based threat, with the persecution based upon race, religion, nationality, political views or membership in a particular social group.  The flight of Valles from the Mexican drug cartels does not meet those criteria.
