After searching the entire campus, police failed to find an armed intruder.
"The campus alert is lifted. There will continue to be a large police presence on campus today," said a university statement. "Police have not received nor discovered additional information about a person possibly carrying a weapon beyond what was reported this morning."
The girls were not accused of providing false information. "The officers believed [the girls] believed what was reported, and that’s the information they went with,” said Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum.
Virginia Tech authorities made sure to react quickly to the scare after criticism of their slow response in 2007 led to a fine by federal authorities. They notified the campus community via the school’s website.
