You are here: Technology Green Tech An Industry Electrified
David Shelburg has been interested in the automotive industry since he was a baby. “The first word in my baby book was ‘car,’” Shelburg said with a laugh. At the precocious age of 16, Shelburg paid the first and last rent on his own small dealership. Just 90 days later, he was in the black.

Shelburg graduated from a car salesman to a car distributor before finally settling into his current role: importing cars as the owner of the Auto kam, LLC. But it wasn’t long before he was confronted with the inevitable: big changes in the industry. As the world recognizes a growing need for alternative fuel solutions, Shelburg accepts his new mission: importing less diesel and more electric.

“I’ve been a great lover of the total combustion engine. I said ‘Old friend, it’s time we move on.’ The future’s gonna be hybrid or electric,” he said. “Either move up, or move over.”

It was a brave decision on his part to change focus, but Shelburg is confident his business will expand as a result. “My goal is to bring in more electric cars. We’re going to have a little convertible, a little sedan, and a little four-wheel drive SUV—all electric.”

Big changes like these, of course, are not without their challenges. Autokam is up against an established diesel industry, and his profits may see a plateau while the world searches for ways to make alternative energy more affordable. But if anyone can handle these problems, it’s the guy who has been in the industry for over 60 years. “I’m in this thing for a fight,” said Shelburg. “I don’t back off.”
