You are here: Law & Politics Government Israel Prepares for Palestine Gaza Flotilla
Pro-Palestinian activists have plans to launch a second sea convoy to the Gaza Strip next month in hopes of breaching the Israeli blockade and regaining control of the coastal land.
The flotilla campaign initiates a potentially dangerous confrontation between Palestine and Israel, reminiscent of a similar, yet smaller-scaled sea raid that occurred last year between Turkish and Israeli forces leaving nine people dead and at least seven others wounded.
Yigal Palmor, spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, is urging a peaceful resolution.  While the Israeli military is determined to retain control of its land and sea blockade, they hope to intercept the Palestinian flotilla with as few casualties as possible.
Israeli military officials have confirmed that preparations are in progress and that new tactics will be used this time around, yet have declined to elaborate.  The projected departure date for the new flotilla is May 31, 2011, one year after the clash between Turkey and Israel.
