Strauss-Kahn, a former Communist, currently serves as the Managing Director of the International Money Fund (IMF), an intergovernmental organization that oversees the global financial system and is based in Washington, D.C. Strauss-Kahn is also backed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
In fact, the latest issue of Washington Magazine ran a profile entitled “The Invisible Man” on Strauss-Kahn, largely unknown in the United States, which posed the question of his potential bid for the French presidency.
Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson has ordered Strauss-Kahn to be held in Riker's Island, New York's primary prison complex. Bail was denied because Strauss-Kahn had attempted to board a flight prior to his arrest.
Strauss-Kahn's arrest has led some to question the effectiveness of the IMF, which has been criticized for favoring Western countries over developing nations for loans and imposing sanctions and stipulations on developing nations that request loans. Strauss-Kahn has served as the Managing Director since November of 2007.
