For those with a fear of needles, any insertion of an intravenous device, especially a central line placement, may seem like a nightmare. Central lines are catheters allowing for the administration of medications without multiple accesses or needle sticks, typically placed directly into a vein in the neck or chest. But there is an alternative. A peripherally inserted central catheter, or PICC, is a central line inserted into a vein in the upper arm using ultrasound guidance and an anesthetic to enhance patient comfort. PICCs are both easier to insert and less risky than other central lines.

It is Nancy Moureau’s job to teach people how to perform these insertion procedures safely and effectively. Since 1994 her company, PICC Excellence, has been training nurses, doctors and other medical personnel in PICC insertion and management. “We provide education in a variety of formats to meet the needs of clinicians, administrators, hospitals and manufacturers,” Moureau said. “Our goal is to get as much education out there as possible.” What sets PICC Excellence apart is the variety of educational options available, including one-on-one training, workshops in Atlanta and a full array of resources online at www.piccexcellence.com. “We were the first company to begin online self-education for vascular access, and the one with the greatest longevity,” said Moureau. “And we have an extensive list of programs—from insertion to care and maintenance, from adult to pediatric, from basic ultrasound to advanced levels—providing what may be the best in this type of education.”

Because complications can occur during and after any central venous catheter placement, proper training and ongoing education are essential. “There are so many new trends with vascular access, including new EKG placement technology and infection prevention education. All of these new trends create wonderful opportunities for us,” Moureau said. “We are very busy at this point, working hard to meet all the requested educational needs.”
