You are here: Health Diet & Fitness Food Pyramid Replaced with MyPlate
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture unveiled the latest update to the ubiquitous symbol of a well-balanced diet, the food pyramid: MyPlate.

According to the USDA, one half of a meal plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, with whole grains and lean protein on the other half. The MyPlate design is meant to serve as an uncomplicated, basic symbol to remind people to think about their food choices since it is often difficult to determine the best foods to eat with so many options available to consumers, said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Organized to mimic a dinner plate setup, the new icon divides the fruit, grains, vegetable and protein groups in a format resembling a pie chart. The dairy group is represented by a cup to the right, and the fats and oils are omitted entirely. The new design is meant to encourage Americans to adopt healthier eating habits and learn about leading a more active lifestyle at choosemyplate.gov.

“This is a quick, simple reminder for all of us to be more mindful of the foods that we're eating and as a mom, I can already tell how much this is going to help parents across the country,” said First Lady Michelle Obama, advocate of healthy living for children, in a statement.
