Choosing summer footwear that looks and feels great

(ARA) - So long, snow boots, warm weather is here at last after one of the snowiest winters on record. But while you're skipping through summer in your saucy sandals or padding through the sand in your favorite flip-flops, what toll will your seasonal footwear take on your hardworking feet?   Nearly eight of every 10 Americans have experienced foot problems caused by wearing uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. "Many of us increase our activity levels in the summer, and that could mean an increased risk of foot and ankle discomfort or even injury," says APMA President and podiatrist Dr. Kathleen Stone. "Plus, many of the shoes we enjoy wearing during warm weather, like flip-flops and sandals, may not always be the best choice in terms of foot health."

The foot health experts at APMA offer some advice for taking care of your feet this summer:

Finding flip-flops

Once considered only beach wear, flip-flops have gone fashionable, now showing up in offices, classrooms and social events when warm weather arrives. But some styles may be more harmful to your feet than others and can cause blisters and foot pain. When shopping for flip-flops:

* Forego vinyl or rubber and look for high-quality, soft leather, which will minimize the potential for blisters and other irritations. The APMA certifies some footwear products with its Seal of Acceptance, which tells you a team of APMA podiatrists have evaluated the footwear to ensure it allows the most normal foot function and promotes foot health.

* Like all shoes, the flip-flop should bend at the ball of the foot. Don't buy it if the shoe bends completely in half.

* Straps should fit comfortably but not be too loose or too snug. Your foot should not hang off the edge of the flip-flop. The thong between the toes should not be irritating.

* If last year's flip-flops show severe signs of wear, toss them and buy a new pair.

* Don't wear flip-flops for long walks; even the sturdiest styles don't offer sufficient arch support and shock absorption for extended wearing. And never wear them when doing yard work or playing sports.

* If you suffer from heel pain or diabetes, avoid flip-flops altogether.

No sandal scandals

As popular as flip-flops, sandals are versatile options for warm weather footwear, but you don't have to sacrifice foot health to look good in them. Foot care specialists with the APMA suggest that you should choose a sandal as much for its comfort and support as its fashion appeal. Fortunately, following a few simple steps can ensure your feet look and feel good in the summers hottest fashion sandals:

* Flats and slides are comfy and convenient, but prolonged wearing and inadequate support and cushioning may lead to arch and heel pain. Use cushioned inserts to improve sandals' support, and choose styles that have soles that don't twist excessively.

* Gladiator sandals are back in step this season, but some styles may irritate the toes and cause calluses on the heels. Choose natural materials like soft, supple leather. Toes and heels should not hang off edges.

* Platforms and high heels may make your legs look great, but they can also put you at risk of foot and ankle injuries. Opt for heels less than 2 inches high, which offer more stability.

* Rubber soles with good traction, and a wider, flatter wedge are a must for anyone wearing wedges or espadrilles.

* Peep-toe sandals can put a lot of pressure on your feet, causing bunions and hammertoes over time. Wear them for short periods only and use APMA accepted toe inserts to improve comfort.

* Ankle-wrap sandals often lack true ankle support, and friction from the straps may cause blisters. Choose sandals with straps made of soft, breathable material like leather, cotton or satin. Never wrap the straps too tightly.

Podiatrists are uniquely trained to treat ailments of the foot and ankle, even serious conditions that may require surgery. If you suffer from persistent pain in your feet or ankles, it may be time to see a podiatrist. You can find a podiatrist by visiting the APMA's website, www.apma.org. You'll also find more helpful information on how to keep your feet healthy at any age, and during any activity, on the site.

Soft water contributes to more comfortable living

(ARA) - Ensuring they drink enough glasses of water each day to be healthy is second nature for most people. But how many think about the advantages of soft water for their families?  Water is one of those staples often taken for granted, until it's gone or everyone is experiencing some of the issues associated with hard water in many parts of the country. About 85 percent of U.S. households have some level of hard water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As the population continues to grow and become more diverse, many homeowners may be feeling the effects of hard water without even realizing it.

Most hard water contains calcium and magnesium. The hardness of your water depends on the amount of these and other dissolved minerals. A great solution is to install a water softener in your home.

This spring as you're looking for effective ways to make your life more comfortable and less stressful, think about the many benefits of soft water for your family. The term "hard water" originally referred to water that was difficult or hard to work with. Everyone has enough other things in life that are difficult or hard to work with, so let your water "soften" things up around the house.

Benefits of soft water
Soft water is gentler on your clothes and helps them last longer. Clothes tend to wear out 15 percent faster when washed in hard water.

Soft water also helps your appliances last longer. The American Water Works Association says washing machines using hard water can wear out up to 30 percent faster than those using soft water.

Soft water can help keep your dishes and glassware looking new because it helps eliminate the unsightly buildup of film that hard water can create.

Benefits for your family
Soft water helps remove the mineral deposits that can be left on your body from hard water. Instead of your skin drying out, soft water helps make it feel soft and smooth.

Soft water makes it much easier to keep your hair looking great - there isn't a buildup of mineral deposition coating it. Soft water also makes hair easier to brush and detangle.

Soft water means less soap is needed to cleanse the skin. This can be extremely important for families with young children, since their skin is often more sensitive.

Choosing the right water softening salt
Diamond Crystal Pellets are now available in new easy-to-carry two-handle bags that are also easier on the environment: the poly bags are made of 50 percent recycled material. Through a special manufacturing process, the recycled-content bags are just as strong, storable and fade-resistant as the original, so that in addition to making life more comfortable for your family with soft water, you can make the chore of carrying bags of salt less of a burden. Soft water fits a focus on personal and environmental care - it's a small option with big impact.

Fall footwear: Start shopping the trends now and stay ahead of the fashion curve

The wardrobe update is as common a fall occurrence as leaves changing color, and perhaps the most-changed wardrobe staples are shoes. But instead of heading out to buy new footwear based on what's going to keep you cozy in the coming months, pre-edit your shopping bags by exploring which of the season's trends will suit you. Once you're armed with an idea of the looks you want, you'll be ahead of the curve when you start shopping.   Short cuts: They've been around for the past couple of seasons, but new variations on the bootie are keeping the look fresh and trend-worthy. One of the best features about booties is that they are available in such wide variety that you can find versions that are appropriate for everything from a night out to the office. Look for peep-toes for a bolder look or seek out a more classically styled Cole Haan shoes that will be chic and office appropriate at once.

Sky high: Towering heels are just part of the proposition - platforms are adding extra height to take you to Amazon proportions. You'll see the trend across brands and styles, from Prada shoes to Lanvin booties. Given that you can find the trend across the style spectrum, you'll be able to create a soaring silhouette whether you're wearing dresses or pants.

Long lines: Over-the-knee boots are an even more dramatic statement than regular mid-calf boots, which might be why so many women are eager to find just the right pair. The leg-elongating effects of these boots are doubled when you pair them with skinny jeans or a miniskirt. One thing is for sure: You'll stand out wherever you go in these show-stopping shoes.

Buckle up: From pumps to flats to the newly-revived clogs, a little heavy metal in the form of prominent buckles is a major feature of fall's shoes. It's a little bit rock and roll, a little bit biker chic and also reminiscent of the military-inspired looks that have been gaining ground recently. The look is surprisingly versatile, giving a little extra attitude to everything from office attire to flirty skirts.

Royal color: From plum to hyacinth, purple is everywhere - especially on feet. Depending on the shade you choose, it can act as a highlight or be re-invented as a neutral. While they might be most famous for their red soles, Christian Louboutin shoes in purple are the perfect combination of classic styling that will last for ages and of-the-moment color.

Confident style: How to express your true inner beauty

(ARA) - Your appearance - from what you wear, to how you style your hair, to how you carry yourself - sends a message to the outside world. When you exude confident style, that message stays consistent across all of your style "personalities," going from your work attire to your casual outfits to your most glammed-up evening wear.   When making style changes, many women make the mistake of thinking that they have to change everything and are tempted to try all of the most recent trends. That can be a recipe for fashion frustration. Giving your style a refreshed attitude can be much simpler than you'd expect. Keeping your innate style in mind, you can change up your wardrobe by simply adding small new elements. Even tiny changes can make a difference, while still letting you express who you are. Here are some more tips that can help you update your look:

* Face forward: Most women know that buying a new lipstick is a small indulgence that can make you feel great. But it's more than just the action of buying that provides a boost - something as simple as a new lip color can change the way you look at yourself, and give you a fresh new perspective.

With increased attention being paid to living a more natural lifestyle, mineral makeup is becoming increasingly popular. The M*Vie line from online retailer Midnight Velvet (www.midnightvelvet.com) is a full range of mineral makeup that suits a wide variety of complexions. The site also has instructional videos from style and beauty expert Maureen Burke and a blog about the latest beauty trends.

* A beautiful foundation: The most important parts of the great buildings of the world are the interior structures that keep them standing. So, if your body is a temple, make sure it has a good foundation. Having the right intimates, from bras to camisoles and body shapers, can help your clothes fit better and lay more elegantly on your figure.

* Feel scent-sational: Scent is highly tied to memory, but while certain fragrances might remind you of your loved ones, you also want to have a scent of your own that people will remember you by. To make a statement that's uniquely "you," seek out your own signature scents.

Keep in mind that not all fragrances work for all occasions. Seasons can play a big role: lighter, fresher scents feel breezy in the summer, but richer, bolder scents evoke warmth in the cold of winter. Test out a number of perfumes - many people often find their favorites in unexpected packages. Online retailers like Midnight Velvet offer great prices on classic and designer fragrances, making it easier to purchase your favorites.

* Be yourself: Even when your closet needs updating, you should be true to yourself. Clothes are a form of self-expression. Wear what makes you feel confident and expresses your personality. Women's accessories often say a lot about who they are, from the nostalgia of a hat to the sophistication of adding a draped scarf, and they are one of the simplest ways to breathe new life into your wardrobe. Even small investments in accessories can have a big impact on your style.

It's true that you can't go just anywhere to find the clothes that combine a modern sensibility with a unique twist of personality. It's worth the effort to find a place to shop that carries exactly what you're looking for. For example, Midnight Velvet has its designs specially created to cater to the tastes of its customers. The site also offers a safe and secure credit plan and personalized service that helps you get exactly what you want.

When you're wearing beautiful clothes and all the right accessories, it's easy to feel confident. But when your personal style and inner beauty show through, you'll stand out no matter what you're wearing.

A guide to good-looking facial hair

As the popularity of facial hair continues to rise, it's no surprise that a bevy of facial hair styles grace a wide range of men. Nearly 60 percent of men nationwide grow some style of facial hair, according to a recent survey by WAHL Trimmers. But, despite the growing popularity, many hesitate to let their facial hair grow because of the perceived challenge and responsibility of grooming and upkeep.   "The first thing people notice about you is your face. Well-maintained facial hair can make or break that all-important first impression," explains celebrity stylist, salon owner and WAHL master barber Ben Phillips. "Unfortunately, maintaining facial hair can be a game of trial and error for most guys. But it doesn't have to be. Making a few tweaks to your existing technique can make all the difference in perfecting your personal style."

According to Phillips, the key to a well-groomed look is understanding what shape best suits your face and finding the right grooming tool to deliver the desired style. When considering an electric trimmer, be sure to purchase one that has the power, precision, design and run-time to easily maintain your facial hair style.

Here are 10 tips to keep your facial hair looking good. More can be found at www.wahlnation.com:

1. Before you trim, first comb hair straight using a narrow tooth comb.
2. Trim when your hair is dry.
3. For most facial hair styles, start by outlining and shaping the hair with a beard trimmer.
4. Manage thickness with either a snap-on length-guide comb or an adjustable length-guide comb. For longer hair, comb and trim in the direction of the hair growth.
5. Under your chin, follow the contours of your face and jaw line, work toward your ear and upper beard line using an upward motion. Use a slightly shorter length underneath the jaw line as hair tends to grow thicker than on your cheeks and chin.
6. For above the jaw line, start near the ear on one side and trim down to the chin. Repeat on the other side.
7. Complete any look by cleaning up around your lips.
8. The style you choose will dictate the length of time between trims. For a goatee, that could be every few days. The size of facial hair should also be in relation to your facial features. For example, consider a full mustache if you have a pronounced nose and mouth.
9. Remember, it's about personal style. Experiment with different facial hair styles and shapes to see what best suits your face.
10. Make sure to choose a trimmer that is best suited for your desired facial hair. WAHL offers specific tools for each trimming style, including the Lithium Ion grooming kit, the first tool to harness the power of lithium ion technology.

If you've mastered these trimming tips and proudly sport facial hair, you could possibly be named a WAHL Man of the Year in the fifth annual search for the best mustache, goatee and beard in America. "What started out as a simple contest has quickly escalated into a growing community of men who believe in rugged individuality and expression through facial hair," Phillips says.

Winners of the contest will receive a 42-inch high-definition television. To enter the competition, simply submit a photo of yourself with a mustache, goatee or beard along with some basic contact information at www.wahlnation.com by Oct. 10.

Secrets every bride can use to make her wedding unique

(ARA) - Every bride-to-be dreams of putting her unique stamp on her wedding day. Blending her chosen wedding colors into many of the occasion's elements is just the first step toward a creative and beautiful event. Brides in gorgeous gowns, bridesmaids and groomsmen decked out in the wedding party's colors and striking flowers are the perfect accompaniment to the colorful landscape of the summer and fall wedding seasons.   Selecting the perfect ways to feature wedding colors is a very personal representation of the bride and groom. If you're a bride-to-be, picture homemade jewelry embellishing your wedding dress, table decorations that match your wedding theme and colors perfectly, or all your guests looking over unique programs that you made at your kitchen table.

"Making wedding decorations or even gifts for the wedding party allows you to put a lot of creativity and personality into the project. And, because you made it yourself, you'll have a customized, one-of-a-kind item that perfectly matches your wedding and its decor," says Courtney Talkington, manager of education and inspiration for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. "Another idea for your DIY wedding is to involve your family, friends and wedding party in making the projects, allowing everyone to be included in the fun and creativity."

Using a centuries-old technique of quilling is one way to create a homemade necklace with a unique look in beautiful colors. Not only does the rolled paper look beautiful in decorative flower shapes, it's also a great way to incorporate keepsakes such as ticket stubs or love letters from the dating and engagement years into meaningful, wearable art. Are you new to quilling? Quilling classes will be offered at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores starting in September.

Quilled memory necklace

Supplies and tools:
Thin paper strips for quilling: scrapbook papers, ticket stubs, old love letters and other paper mementos
Quilling tool
X-Acto knife and cutting mat
Tacky glue
1 spool tiger tail
1 package each of 3 mm and 4 mm Blue Moon glass pearl beads
1 clasp set
Crimp beads
Crimp tool
Bent-nose pliers
Wire cutter
2 6 mm jump rings
1/4 yard Tulle
1/4 yard of 1/4 inch wide Organdy ribbon
Hand sewing needle
Thread
Optional book: "The Art of Paper Quilling, Designing Handcrafted Gifts and Cards"

Directions:
1. Using paper strips for quilling, make several flower shapes in various sizes and colors. Set aside.
2. Cut two pieces of tiger tail about 12 inches long.
3. Attach one end of one tiger tail strand to clasp using crimp bead and crimp tool. Trim excess wire.
4. String glass pearl beads for about 8 to 9 inches.
5. Attach one jump ring to opposite end using a crimp bead and crimp tool. Trim excess wire. Set aside.
6. Repeat steps three to five for second tiger tail strand.
7. Cut two pieces of tiger tail - one 8 inches long and another 10 inches long.
8. Attach tiger tail strands to jump ring. Adjust the 8 inch strand to measure approximately 6 inches and the 10 inch strand to measure approximately 8 inches.
9. Lay paper flowers out on work surface so they fit nicely between the two pearl strands and on top of the two tiger tail strands.
10. Cut two pieces of tulle slightly larger than your flower layout, following the outline of the flower shapes. Cut two large strips of tulle - about 3/4 inches wide and 3 inches long - to tie onto necklace at the sides.
11. Sandwich the two tiger tail wires between the tulle. Hand stitch the tulle together close to the tiger tail wire.
12. Tie the tulle onto the necklace at jump rings. Trim tulle to desired length.
13. Cut two pieces of organdy ribbon each 2 1/2 inches long. Tie onto necklace at jump rings. Trim.
14. Glue paper flower in place on top of the tulle following desired layout. Let dry.
15. Add glass pearl beads to flower centers. Let dry.

If you're looking for something for your guests to take home with them, consider designing your wedding programs with a keepsake envelope. The directions below use fall burgundy colors, but feel free to mix and match the colors to personalize the program to your wedding.

Personalized wedding program

Supplies and tools:
8 1/2 inches by 11 inches of Burgundy suede cardstock
12 inches by 12 inches of Black Magic cardstock, black/red two-sided
12 inches by 12 inches of Burgundy suede paper
Lime green cardstock
12 inches by 12 inches Vellum sheets, translucent clouds
2 shades of purple, narrow ribbon
5 round beads, grape
5 seed beads, grape
Silver leaf charm
Silver "Follow your heart" charm
5 headpins
2 jump rings
Silver heart brad
20-gauge Silver wire
Grape leaf template
Paper trimmer and scissors
Corner rounder
Hole punches, regular and large
Vellum tape
Adhesive dot runner or glue stick
Jewelry tools: wire cutter, round-nose and chain-nose pliers
Computer (to generate text)
Ruler and stylus (or bone folder)

Directions
1. Cut burgundy suede cardstock 5 1/2 inches by 12 inches. Score 4 inches up from bottom edge and fold, using ruler and stylus, to create a pocket. If left and right edges are not quite even, trim them now, up to 1/2 inch total. Punch top four corners of folded pocket with corner rounder.

2. Using included pattern, trace a grape leaf on the back of the pocket flap and cut out with scissors. Print the bride's and groom's names and wedding date on vellum, so that it will fit the leaf shape. Attach the vellum to the inside of the pocket with adhesive dot runner. Attach a panel of lime green cardstock behind the vellum for a subtle green hue. Cut a thin strip of burgundy suede cardstock to fit behind top of pocket. Round corners and attach so the back side of the paper is visible behind the suede pocket. Using large hole punch, punch a notch on the left and right sides, using photo as guide for securing ribbon.

3. Print vellum panels with wedding information, no wider than 4 1/4 inches. Mount on burgundy suede paper and Black Magic cardstock; round top right corner of vellum.

4. To create bead grape cluster, string a green seed bead on a headpin, followed by a round green bead. Make six to eight. Create a wrapped loop at the end of each. Curl one end of 20-gauge wire and string on grapes and leaf charm. Create a wrapped loop.

5. Wrap narrow purple ribbons around the wedding program pocket and tie in a knot to the right of the leaf cut-out. Slip the bead cluster onto a jump ring and attach over the knot. Tie the ribbon, catching the jump ring, to prevent it from sliding. Attach the "Follow your heart" charm to a second jump ring and attach it to the first jump ring.

6. Punch a hole through all three layers of the program and insert a silver heart brad.

"There are so many ways to take your wedding from mainstream to magnificent" advises Talkington. "A little inspiration is all you need to incorporate your ideas into the wedding of your dreams."

How to know when it's time to replace old beauty products

(ARA) - From the first day she applies new lipstick or inaugurates a new bottle of facial cleanser, every American woman is headed toward the same dilemma. How long will that lipstick tube last? Does the razor you used twice and then forgot about for a couple months have some life left? When is cleanser too old to be effective?

Many of us are unsure when beauty products expire - or even if they do at all. Consequently, we may wind up holding on to partial bottles and remnants of products because we're not sure of their usefulness. The arrival of warm weather is a great time to purge.

Cleaning out old beauty products can be emotionally cathartic, and spare you from using expired items that may potentially irritate your skin or that just don't work anymore. Plus, tossing the old opens up opportunities for discovering great new cosmetics, beauty items and skin care products. Here's some advice to get you started:

Cosmetics

Because cosmetic products are used on some very germ-laden areas of our bodies, like around the eyes, nose and mouth, they can breed bacteria. Therefore, they don't have an indefinite shelf-life. The usable life of some common cosmetics are:

* Mascara and liquid eyeliner - three months

* Cream eye shadows -- three to four months

* Powder shadows -- six months if you don't reuse the applicator; three to four when reusing applicators

* Liquid, cream or powder foundation - one year if regularly applied with a new sponge or puff; six months if applied with fingertips.

* Cream and gel blush -- six months. Powder blushes - about a year

Once you've purged old cosmetics you'll be ready to restock with some of the season's hottest new colors and products.

Skin care products

Skin care products can also be susceptible to bacteria growth over time, so if you don't finish a product within a few months, keep an eye on how long you've had it. Discard products like moisturizers, concealers and toners that contain skin nutrients like vitamin C or alpha hydroxy acids after they've been open for about 12 months. Those active ingredients can lose their effectiveness after a year.

Exposure to moisture, air, direct sunlight and extreme temperatures can all affect the ingredients in skin care products, so store them in a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight. And if a product separates or smells differently than it did when you first opened it, discard it right away.

Once you clear out old cleansers and moisturizers, reward your hard work by trying something new, like Olay Professional Pro-X Cleansers, which offer exfoliating and cream formulas. Both are designed to purify and renew skin for a refreshed, smooth texture. Or, pamper dry skin in areas that often get overlooked, like under your arms. Secret Soothing Effects antiperspirants and deodorants use soy and acai berry to soothe sensitive skin and hydrate that underappreciated skin under your arms.

Shaving products

Warm weather means getting a good shave is more important than ever for anyone who wants to wear shorts, tanks, miniskirts or bathing suits. Old shaving products, like razors and creams, not only become a breeding ground for bacteria, they can also leave your legs looking like you've been through a battle.

Depending on how often you shave, a razor should last a couple of weeks or a little longer. A good rule of thumb is to discard disposable razors when the moisture strip on top wears off. If a blade is visibly rusty, toss it immediately. To avoid rust problems, don't leave your razor in the shower where it will repeatedly get wet every time someone showers.

Gather up old razors and any leftover shaving products older than a year and trash them. Then, treat yourself to a new shaving experience by trying Venus Embrace, a woman's razor that gives a close, comfortable shave using five spring-mounted blades surrounded by a protective ribbon of moisture.

Cleaning out old cosmetics and skin care products can help you feel and look better this season. Plus, it's great inspiration to reward your cleaning efforts by trying something new.

How to remain healthy and independent in retirement

(ARA) - You spent years working hard and saving so you could spend your retirement doing the things you want to do. Now that you're living that dream, you can ensure you'll be able to enjoy many years of retirement by staying healthy and allowing yourself to live independently for as long as you are able.   By staying fit (both mentally and physically) and suiting your home environment to your needs, you'll be well on your way to the retirement you've always dreamed of. Americans who are currently age 65 are expected on average to live at least 18 more years, so there's plenty of time to enjoy. Here are a few ways to make your golden years more enjoyable:

* Find exercise that works for you. If you are no longer able to do some of the high-impact workouts that you once could, think about lower impact but entertaining activities like bocce ball or shuffle board. Nordic walking, where walking poles are used to both take pressure off your legs and exercise your upper body, has also become a popular activity with both seniors and others seeking workout alternatives. Home exercise equipment like fan bikes and elliptical machines offered by retailers like Montgomery Ward can provide an easy way to stay in shape within the shelter of your home during the more inclement months of the year.

* Take control of your health. Don't wait for your doctor to tell you that something is wrong. By checking your blood pressure and cholesterol regularly, you can make sure you get the help you need in time if your numbers aren't where they should be. Blood pressure monitors can be purchased for an affordable price from health stores or at www.wards.com.

* Keep your mind sharp. By interacting with others through volunteering or weekly get-togethers like a social group or book club, you'll keep your brain active and in good health.

* Make your home fit you. As you age, you may need to make improvements to your home to make it more accessible for you. Everyone gets to an age where it's harder to get around, so take making these improvements in stride, as it will help you stay in your home longer. Doing things like adding grab bars to showers and bathtubs to prevent falls or purchasing a lift chair that's easy to get in and out of can make your home easier to live in. More information on lift chairs can be found at www.wards.com.

* Make your home safe. Adding home security features like motion lights or a security system can help you feel more secure in your home. It will also give your friends and relatives the peace of mind that you are safe when you are there. If you plan on doing a lot of traveling in retirement, a home security system will help ease your worries when you are away.

Celebrate the environment with the newest eco-chic products

(ARA) - As you lay out on the beach soaking in some sunshine, or relax in the green grass in your backyard, you're reminded just how important it is to protect the environment. There are small steps you can take to create big change and it can be as simple as the beauty products you buy.

Here are some nature-friendly ways to help keep you and the environment protected:

Debunk myths before starting a weight loss program

(ARA) - It's one of the seasons of the year when people are thinking of losing weight. Whether it's for a family or class reunion or trips to the beach, finding your own motivation for losing weight is critical. It's also important not to jeopardize your success by believing the myths and misconceptions about weight loss.

Getting started with a healthy weight loss plan can be a minefield of confusion. Luckily, there are some programs designed to reveal the truth about losing weight the healthy way. The Mayo Clinic Diet - which focuses on changing habits and developing a more healthy, yet still enjoyable lifestyle for a lifetime - is a trustworthy example that breaks through the myths and misconceptions with simple, evidence-based recommendations.

The Weight-control Information Network, a national information service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health, provides a list of weight loss and nutrition myths on its website. Here are a few:

Myth: Fad diets work for permanent weight loss.
Truth: Diets that strictly limit calories or food choices are hard to follow for long periods of time and may not be healthy. You may experience success in the short term, but if you feel the program is not sustainable for you long-term, you will likely gain the weight back quickly.

The Mayo Clinic Diet includes a two-week quick start program that focuses on breaking unhealthy habits and adding healthy habits. According to the book's medical editor-in-chief, Dr. Donald Hensrud, "It's the healthiest way there is to lose weight fast. It's safe and evidence-based, and is intended to be a two-week quick-start program that gets people motivated, helps them understand how their lifestyle habits affect their weight, and gets them on the right track to make permanent lifestyle changes."

Myth: Eating late in the evening will make you gain weight.
Truth: It doesn't matter when you eat - a calorie is a calorie at all times of the day. What you eat, how much you eat, and how much physical activity you get on a daily basis are much more influential factors. No matter when you eat, your body will store extra calories as fat.

Myth: Skipping meals will help you lose weight.
Truth: Studies show that people who skip breakfast and eat fewer times during the day are, on average, heavier. The Mayo Clinic Diet recommends eating a healthy breakfast and balanced meals, as well as a virtually unlimited amount of fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Weight loss doesn't have to mean starvation or deprivation, and you just might benefit from the added nutrients of a more well-rounded diet.

Myth: Low-fat or fat-free means no calories or fewer calories.
Truth: Many processed low-fat or fat-free foods have just as many or sometimes more calories as the full-fat versions of the same foods. They may contain added sugar, flour, or starch thickeners to compensate for the flavor that is lost when the fat is removed. All of these ingredients add calories.

Myth: It's possible to lose weight by eating whatever you want.
Truth: There are some diets that say this is possible, but there are some major qualifiers to the point. It comes down to calories in and calories out. Portion control is key, and learning how to gauge portion sizes can help you avoid needing to count calories or points. The Mayo Clinic Diet offers simple visual cues to help you learn healthy portion sizes of calorie-dense foods.

It's easy to get lost in the confusing strategies that a lot of diets ask you to follow. But weight loss doesn't have to be a big mystery. With a good diet plan that you can live with for a lifetime, this might just be the last summer you have to stress about looking good in your bathing suit.

Beachy-keen tips for summer sun and fun

(ARA) - There are few better ways to celebrate the summertime than by spending the day outdoors at the beach or pool. But, as anyone who has gone home covered in sand and fruit punch stains will testify, a day at the beach is not always as carefree as it sounds. Prevent beach burnout by sticking to the following tips:

Sunscreen: Sure, you've heard it a million times, but it bears repeating: apply sunscreen every time you plan to spend the day outdoors. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen that:

1. Is water resistant.
2. Has an SPF of 30 or higher.
3. Provides broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.

Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors, using 1 ounce (approximately enough to fill a shot glass) to cover all exposed areas of your body.

Sunburn treatment: In case you missed the sunscreen tips above (or simply happen to burn easily), try to keep in mind the following tips from WebMD for sunburn treatment:

* Try cold compresses with a damp washcloth. It will help soothe the inflammation and make you feel a lot better.
* Drink plenty of water! Dehydration often results from prolonged sun exposure, so do your best to replace what you lost.
* Take a cool, but not cold, bath. Avoid using oils, perfumes or bath salts - the chemicals could potentially irritate your skin.
* Find an aloe-based lotion, and apply it to the sunburned area. Aloe naturally cools and soothes irritated skin.

Towels and clothing: Make sure to bring along an extra towel or two, just in case one of the kids decides to take theirs into the water with them. And remember to bring along an extra T-shirt or pair of shorts should your beach trip continue on into the evening when temperatures dip. Also, consider bringing a pouch for storing jewelry and other accessories to prevent them from being lost. Otherwise, you may find yourself having to use a metal detector to find lost items.

Stain solutions: Sadly, lifeguards aren't on duty for stain emergencies. Be prepared to be your own rescuer and load up on laundry know-how by checking out Clorox's Summer Stain Hotline (1-877-STAIN-411). Available 24/7 throughout the summer months, the Summer Stain Hotline allows you to select from a list of common summer stains (sunscreen, salad dressing, ice cream, etc.) and receive expert advice from Dr. Laundry.

If you can't find your stain on the hotline, you are sure to find it on Dr. Laundry's blog (drlaundryblog.com), or you can download myStain, a free new application for your iPhone, iPod Touch or Droid smart phone, which keeps a remedy for every fumble, spill and dribble right at hand.

Six apps that will assist you in healthy living

(ARA) - When fingers get pointed in debates over the obesity epidemic in the United States, technology sometimes shoulders some of the blame. Time in front of computer screens or television is often listed as part of the reason why Americans aren't as healthy as they have been in the past. But the truth is there are also technological advances that have the potential to guide you in your quest for a healthier lifestyle, whether that is eating right, exercising or keeping tabs on vital numbers that are important to your health.

Take smart phone applications for example. Nowadays, you can find applications for just about anything in life that might capture your interest, and healthy living is no exception. So if you're looking to stay fit and healthy, here are six mobile apps that give you and your family a little extra help:

Lose It!: Counting calories is perhaps the simplest and most effective way to keep track of your health goals, especially if it involves weight loss. But it's difficult to do all the adding and subtracting in your head, which is where the free app Lose It! comes in. The app allows you to enter what you eat each day and calculates not only calories, but fat, protein, cholesterol and carbohydrates based on portion size. It also allows you to enter different types of workouts, from walking to yoga, to see how many calories you will burn while you are exercising.

Carb Counting with Lenny: This app is designed to help children with diabetes count carbohydrates to help manage their diabetes, but can be of use to anyone. Using their mascot Lenny the Lion, who also uses insulin pump therapy, Medtronic Diabetes introduced this app, which allows children with type 1 diabetes to learn about carbohydrate levels in basic foods. The application also allows users to create a customizable food guide using their own photos or ones they find on the Internet, as well as play games to test their carb-counting knowledge. Periodic contests and giveaways (www.medtronicdiabetes.com/carb-counting-contest) are announced to reward registered users who get highest game scores. Medtronic Diabetes, which makes such products as continuous glucose monitoring devices, designed the app to be useful and educational for both children with diabetes and others who are interested in monitoring carb intake.

Size Me Up: Another application for kids. This one allows children to enter their current height and receive estimates for how tall they might be in the future, at any given age. This can be used to help keep your child motivated to eat right, so they can grow up to be tall and healthy.

BP Buddy: This application allows people who are monitoring their blood pressure to input their blood pressure numbers and heart rate numbers and log them for up to 60 days. An e-mail feature allows users to send their numbers to their doctor for analysis.

The Carrot: As an interactive journal, this application allows you to track multiple items related to health. In addition to entering information on meals, workouts, and even medication, you can also enter your assessment of your moods or the level of job satisfaction you are feeling at the moment to see if you can pinpoint what healthy habits work best for you.

FitReach: This training and diet application allows you to enter information on your meals, as well as workouts. It also encourages you to do regular weigh-ins so you can compare your weight loss with your goals on graphs that are a part of the app.

Applications are available on iTunes and can also be downloaded through your iPhone, smart phone or other compatible mobile device.

Tips for sprucing up your wardrobe for the spring season

(ARA) - Pack away winter blues with those wool sweaters. Push thoughts of slushy streets and snow shovels to the back of the closet right along with those heavy boots. It's time for the fun part of spring cleaning - switching your wardrobe from cold-weather woolies to warm-weather attire.

Even if you plan to welcome warm weather with a shopping trip to pick up a few of the season's trendy items, chances are you'll also be bringing some of last year's pieces out of storage and stowing your winter clothes away. To save yourself a shopping trip or two, properly clean clothes before you store them, and you'll be able to get several seasons of wear out of them. You'll also want to freshen clothes that have just come out of storage, even if you washed them before packing them away last year.

To help you out, the laundry experts at Cheer have some cleaning advice and storing tips to help you get organized.

Tips for cleaning before and after storage:

* Never overstuff your washer. Putting too much into the washer can reduce its efficiency, causing it to rinse poorly and possibly leave detergent deposits.

* To prevent pilling on fuzzy items like sweaters, turn garments inside out before washing.

* Since you'll probably be doing multiple loads of clothes before you store them away, look for a great value in a detergent - one that keeps your whites and colors sparkling bright, like Cheer. Log on to www.Cheer.com to learn more and receive a $1 off coupon.

* To freshen any winter sweaters, toss them in the dryer on "fluff" setting with a scented dryer sheet and then store.

* Before you toss clothes in the dryer, separate lint shedders like fuzzy sweaters and flannels from garments that attract lint, like knits and corduroys.

Advice for storing seasonal wardrobes

* Always fold sweaters and store flat. Hanging them can cause them to stretch out of shape.

* Store clothes in a cool, dark, well-ventilated location.

* To help winter shoes hold their shape in storage, stuff clean socks inside them.

You can find more storing tips for winter wardrobes at www.Cheer.com.

Packing away last season's clothes and bringing warm weather attire out of storage is one of the most enjoyable tasks of spring cleaning. If you take the time to properly clean and store garments, you'll be ready to face spring looking and feeling great - and your winter garments will be ready when you need them.

Stay balanced: health and lifestyle tips to better manage diabetes

(ARA) - Diabetes affects more than 23 million people in the United States, with type 2 diabetes representing 90 to 95 percent of those cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But the good news is that people with type 2 diabetes can find balance in their lives with a structured plan that includes proper nutrition and regular exercise.

From families to careers to busy social lives, people with diabetes have to manage much more each day than just their condition. Finding time to make exercise, regularly scheduled meals and relaxation part of a daily routine can be a challenge. In fact, more than 55 percent of people with type 2 diabetes say their hectic schedules get in the way of their management plans, with 20 percent ranking it as their number one challenge, according to a recent survey by the International Diabetes Center (IDC) and Abbott.

"Diabetes shouldn't define the lives of people living with the condition," says Mother Love, author, TV personality and ambassador for the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation. "It's all about having the right tools for a successful diabetes management plan that will help them find balance for a healthier, better life."

Mother Love, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1990, made smart nutrition and exercise changes, lost weight and learned to successfully manage her condition. She shares her tips on how to create a successful diabetes management plan:

* Build a team: Create a support team of healthcare professionals, friends and family that you can rely on to reach your health goals. Be sure to consult with your healthcare team to create a diabetes management plan that works for you and includes a balanced diet, exercise, blood-glucose monitoring and medication, if needed.

* Take control of your diet: Say goodbye to poor eating habits like empty-calorie midnight snacks or skipping breakfast and say hello to regularly scheduled, nutritious meals. Nearly half of people with diabetes say eating healthy is most difficult first thing in the morning or late at night, according to the IDC survey. When you're juggling a hectic schedule, nutrition products like Glucerna cereals, snack bars and shakes are a convenient food choice. They are great-tasting and specially formulated to help minimize blood sugar spikes, which can lower A1C levels when used as part of a diabetes management plan. Use Glucerna products under medical supervision.

* Get a move on: Being overweight is a major risk for diabetes, but according to the CDC, it can be prevented or delayed with moderate weight loss and exercise, so get off the couch and get moving. Whether it's swimming, walking or even doing vigorous housework, incorporate exercise into your daily routine. At least 30 minutes of activity, five to seven days a week, will help you get healthy and make the condition more manageable.

* Treat yourself well: Maintaining a balanced, harmonious lifestyle is a key to effectively managing diabetes. Stress is part of daily life for everyone, but too much can be harmful to a person with diabetes because it affects blood glucose levels. Set aside time each day to relax and do the things you enjoy. Write your thoughts in a journal, think of something funny, do yoga or get a massage - anything that will help you unwind.

Making smart, healthy lifestyle changes and adopting a positive mindset can help you find the balance necessary to live a healthier, fuller life. For more information about diabetes or how to create a management plan, consult your physician and visit glucerna.com.

Upgrade your work wardrobe without breaking the bank

We've all stood in front of our closets, the morning minutes ticking away, saying "I don't have anything to wear." Not only is it a sour note on which to start your morning, but it can make you run late and end up wearing something that either isn't appropriate or doesn't make you feel good.

A few simple steps toward updating - and upgrading - your work wardrobe can go a long way toward ending the "nothing to wear" conundrum.

The key to a good career closet is streamlining. Having too many disparate elements can be visually distracting and lead to overcrowded shelves. Follow these tips, whether you're just entering the workforce or are an experienced office maven.

* Build from the ground up. Shoes can make or break an outfit, particularly at work. Know what's acceptable at your office - some workplaces don't allow open toes or heels - and then look for the best quality shoes that you can afford. There are plenty of great websites where you can find high-end designer shoes at deeply discounted prices. It's essential to have shoes that compliment the rest of your wardrobe, so it's best to start with basic and neutral colors like black, brown or nude.

* Color coordinate. It's easier to make dressing decisions in the early hours of the morning if your wardrobe staples mix and match easily. When you shop, decide what colors look best on you - again, using neutral colors as your foundation - and build around those. If you have a basic background in colors like black, grey or navy, you can easily add pops of color.

* Change shapes. You don't need to wear pants and a jacket every day to look polished and professional. Switch it up by adding skirts, cardigans and a variety of shirts. You can even find great deals on designer dresses that are work-appropriate (and in your chosen base colors) online - look for labels known for great tailoring and they'll last for a long time.

* Little things mean a lot. Accessories can take your outfit to the next level with a minimum of effort - and express a bit of personality, even if you work in a conservative corporate environment. If you're an antiques hound, scour the shops (and the Web) for vintage brooches that add an element of interest. If you love color but your office doesn't, adding a silk scarf is a classic way to inject a little liveliness without being overwhelming or inappropriate. And of course, designer handbags can complete your look and be highly functional. The Internet makes it easier than ever to get authentic high-end bags at prices that used to be unheard of.

* Plan ahead. If you're a great organizer at work, translate the skill at home. You can find websites and apps for smart phones that help you to organize your closet by cataloging everything you have, enabling you to create outfits that you can browse through when you're having a tough time deciding what to wear.

In addition to following these tips, don't be afraid to weed out clothes that are collecting dust. If you haven't worn it in the past six months, it's a safe bet that you won't miss it if you donate it. It might seem counter-intuitive, but having less in your closet can actually make it easier to find something to wear.

Expert tips for staying in style this summer

(ARA) - Maybe it's the bright sun and warm air. Or perhaps Mother Nature inspires us with the season's bright colors. Whatever the reason, something about summer makes us want to look our best. But sweat-inducing temperatures, active lifestyles and the inevitable stains that come from summer feasting can make it hard to stay looking good.

"Summer is a great time to freshen up your style," says Clinton Kelly, co-host of TV's "What Not to Wear" and best-selling author of "Freakin' Fabulous: How to Dress, Speak, Behave, Eat, Drink, Entertain, Decorate and Generally Be Better Than Everyone Else."

Summer brings its share of important style moments, like your favorite cousin's formal wedding or that once-in-a-lifetime summer getaway you'll finally be taking. But those opportunities also come with challenges. When temperatures soar, staying cool and feeling comfortable may replace staying in style as your top wardrobe priority.

"Don't let the lazy feel of summer, the hot temperatures or the active lifestyle convince you to set aside your sense of style," Kelly says. "The worst thing you can do is to opt out of fashion altogether. You can look great and still participate in all the fun things you associate with the season."

Kelly offers some simple advice for staying stylish this summer:

* Don't fear color. Mother Nature dons her brightest hues during warm weather and so should you. "This season, bright colors are in, especially yellow! Be on the lookout for pieces such as citrus-colored tops and accessories that will complement your existing wardrobe," Kelly advises. "Vibrant brights will add a sense of exuberance, especially when they are set against your neutrals."

* Dress appropriately. Floaty, empire-waist, spaghetti-strapped, floor-length gowns may be all the rage in your social circle, but if the style doesn't flatter your figure don't wear it. Likewise, if everyone you know is wearing short shorts this summer, but you don't feel your best in them, find a style of shorts that works for you. "Choose styles based on your body type and how you feel wearing them," Kelly says. "Not every trend will work for every person."

* Stains are the enemy of good style. Whether it's grass stains from that picnic in the park or a huge dollop of barbecue sauce on your favorite tank top, stains are real style-killers. Treat stains immediately and give your laundry detergent a boost with a stain-fighter like OxiClean Max Force Power Paks. Add one convenient pack to each load to help power out summer stains and keep whites white and colors bright. Visit www.OxiClean.com for more stain-fighting advice.

* Shop smart - even in summer. You may be tempted to go on a shopping spree, especially if you're preparing for a great summer vacation. But don't forget basic shopping smarts. Look for functional classics and choose pieces that fit and flatter your body, instead of following the trends. "I'm all about quality over quantity so get a few great pieces and take good care of them," says Kelly. Try on items before you buy. Look for clothes that fit the largest part of your body, and then have them tailored down for a perfect fit.

"Style is timeless and it should carry you from season to season, no matter what the temperature is - or what stains you might face," Kelly says.

Expecting? How to look your best

(ARA) - It's no secret that pregnancy does not always bring out one's inner glamour girl. As your waistline and bust balloon, it's easy to lose all sense of fashion and hide in baggy sweats, oversized button downs, or even your husband's jeans.

Amy Tara Koch, trend expert and author of "BUMP IT UP: Transforming Your Pregnancy Into the Ultimate Style Statement," demonstrates that a baby bump does not translate into losing one's fashion identity. In fact, Koch shows moms easy tips and tricks to transform a handful of basics into dozens of maternity looks. The trick? Accessorizing, layering and rotating key silhouettes per trimester.

"Maximum style, minimal maternity," advises Koch. "You don't need to invest your child's college tuition on a full-blown maternity wardrobe. Style is about mixing and matching compelling accent pieces. 'BUMP IT UP' shows moms how a handful of basics can yield dozens of jaw dropping preggo ensembles."

After combing runways, trend reports and even consulting top designers, Koch has helped translate some of the top trends for new or soon-to-be moms from the runway to the "realway":

*Embrace your waist: Silhouettes remain in the spotlight, so when the notion of zipping your pants becomes comical, use an elasticized band. The soft, seamless stretchy band miraculously sheaths unzippered, rolled to the hips pants, helping extend the lifespan of jeans, trousers and skirts. A lightweight, thigh length top romantically draped over the band "camouflages" your handiwork.

*Go with the flow: Don't pack up the floaty, easy-to-wear shift dresses from your first trimester when your stomach balloons. Instead sport them as tunics. Just add leggings, kitten heels or a heeled wedge.

*Shoe it up: A heel visually lengthens your silhouette and balances out your tummy-enhanced proportion. You don't need 5-inch Carrie Bradshaw stilettos, but, height will balance out the bulge, elongate your body and add that soupcon of glamour that transforms dumpy to diva.

*Super accessorize: When shimmering chain belts no longer circle your girth, pop them over your head for a flashy looking necklace. Tie belts can also be worn as lariat necklaces.

*Keep your shape: A bra that provides shape and support is a lingerie must-have to accentuate and support your curves as your body continues to change before, during and after pregnancy. Pick up seamless microfiber undies and bras which are comfortable and perfect under dresses.

*Bid adieu to bulk: As you sleekify your wardrobe, say goodbye to clunky, unattractive diaper bags. Pampers has recently introduced their new chic, high performance diaper, Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max. Not only are they Pampers driest diaper ever as they help lock in wetness, but they are 20 percent thinner than before which means mom can carry more within less space … so grab a chic diaper clutch.

*Get that glow: Self tanner is the ultimate pick me up so use it strategically on face and body and it will nip the "you look tired" comment in the bud.

Follow your passion for fashion: discover fashion merchandising careers

Do you spend hours reading fashion magazines and watching fashion shows? Are you always at the fabric store checking out the latest fabrics and materials? Do you truly enjoy learning about the history of fashion? If so, you should consider pursuing a fashion merchandising degree.

Fashion merchandising professionals are responsible for spotting the latest fashion trends. They often decide what clothing is produced each season, and they also determine retail inventories and prices. Fashion merchandisers have their finger on the pulse of fashion at all times.

So what kinds of positions should you look for once you've obtained a fashion merchandising degree? Here are a few career opportunities in the field:

Fashion buyer
Fashion buyers can work for department stores, boutiques, independent retailers and other fashion-oriented establishments. These are the people who actually buy new clothing and accessories for the store. In order to do this job successfully, fashion buyers must really understand their target market and have a solid grasp on what they like. They also need to keep their stores up-to-date and organized at all times.

Product developer
Product developers work closely with fashion merchandisers to develop clothing, shoe and accessory lines. They assist with fabric selection and are responsible for creating design prototypes. To be a product designer, you need to have strong design, math and fashion forecasting skills.

Fashion event planner
Fashion event planners generate buzz for a store or brand. They accomplish this by organizing events such as fashion shows, trunk shows or other social events. Fashion event planners are also responsible for hiring models, organizing event promotions and deciding what fashions or accessories will be featured during each event.

If these positions sound interesting to you, you should take some fashion merchandising classes. Once you've taken a few classes, you'll have a greater understanding of the industry and will be able to determine if you'd like to turn your interest into a career.
