You are here: Health Business Health Woman Receives Successful Face Transplant after Chimp Attack
Doctors at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital announced on Friday that the full face transplant they performed will allow Charla Nash to regain her sense of smell and the ability to eat solid foods nearly two years after being mauled by a chimpanzee.

According to Plastic Surgeon Director Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, the procedure performed last month involved removing some tissue and attaching skin and underlying muscle. The entire hard palate of the mouth and teeth were transplanted as well. Within three months Nash will regain sensation in her face, and she will be able to make facial expressions in six to nine months.

Surgeons had also transplanted hands onto Nash, but had to remove them after they failed to thrive. Nash is the second person to receive a double-hand transplant at the same time as a face transplant and is the third at Brigham and Women’s Hospital to receive a full face transplant.

Sandra Herold called Nash in February 2009 to help get her pet chimpanzee, Travis, back inside the house after he used a key to escape. Upon Nash’s arrival, the chimp jumped on her and began biting her. The brutal attack left Nash blind, as well as missing her nose, upper jaw, both upper and lower lips, and most of the soft tissue on her face. Police shot Travis to stop the mauling, and he later died of gunshot wounds.
