You are here: Health Business Health Dick McDonald – A Visionary and a Pragmatist

Dick McDonald, general manager of Executive Strategist, a health care consulting firm for hospitals, cut his teeth in the business world supplying pharmaceutical products to Shopco Stores, a leading retailer in Middle America. It was at Shopco, in the early 1970’s, that McDonald rubbed elbows with Bart Starr, the legendary quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.  After befriending Bart Starr he developed, produced and hosted a television sports show with Starr as the centerpiece.  It was rated the top college and pro coaches’ television show in America, reaching markets in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota.  “He was a great man and we’re glad to have him in our history.”

Executive Strategist is a consulting group with high-powered individuals including the former president of Shopco Stores, who was instrumental in developing The Carolinas Health Care System, comprised of 27 hospitals in North and South Carolina, as well as nursing homes and other facilities, with total revenues of 5.4 billion dollars a year. McDonald believes that health care will always be a crucial part of American domestic policy, but that there is a misunderstanding of the problems facing hospitals today.  “Technology keeps advancing for enhancement of quality care services, as costs continue to increase.” he said.  “And also the shortage of nurses has also been a problem, leading to increased salaries as an incentive.”  McDonald argues that the continuing developments in health care and prescription drugs which are effective in caring for people, at the same time raise the costs, and makes it difficult for hospitals to maintain quality staff, and to “back up your medical staff with the best of tools.  It isn’t that they’re gouging” he said, “because the majority of hospitals in America are non-profit.”

McDonald has been invited into some of the most powerful political arenas of health care and economic reform.  He is currently on the Advisory Council for Economic Development in the U.S. House of Representatives, as an appointee of President Bush.  In the past, he served with the UNESCO campaign under President Nixon.  His company was involved in both the Nixon and Bush campaigns.  On a global level, McDonald is helping to develop the national health care system in Japan.
Aside from health care and politics, McDonald has been invited to speak before the Catholic and the Jewish national conferences on marriage.  An author, his book “Loving Free”, about the positive side of married life, reached the number two spot on the New York Times bestseller list.  McDonald truly is a man for all seasons, and for all cultures.
