Judge Dick Ambrose, who presided over the trial, can choose to reduce his sentence to life without parole, but it remains to be seen whether he will do so.
Witnesses reacted with cheers and applause to Sowell’s sentencing. One person could be heard taunting Sowell with derisive laughter as he left the courtroom.
Although Sowell has received the highest form of punishment, court attendees wanted more.
"Kill him tonight. He doesn't deserve to live," said Dorothy Pollard to msnbc.com. Pollard’s niece, Diane Turner, was one of Sowell’s victims.
"Does he feel shame? Does he feel anything?" asked Vanessa Gay, who was assaulted by Sowell in 2008. "I want him to hurt, not physically. If he has a soul, I want him to hurt."
Victims and jurors were also not moved by Sowell’s words, saying they were “rehearsed” and “lacked remorse.”
"The only thing I want to say is I'm sorry," said Sowell before his sentencing. "I know that might not sound like much, but I truly am sorry from the bottom of my heart."
