The lawsuits claim that both companies utilized one of Siemens’s patented light-emitting diode technologies, which transforms blue light into white light. This feature is particularly in-demand for flat-panel televisions, household LED lightbulbs, mobile phones and other widely used technologies.
Siemens filed its complaint in the U.S. with the International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. and the United States District Court in Wilmington, Del. The company said it also plans to file similar lawsuits against LG in Tokyo and China sometime this week. In addition to becoming more wary of large-name rivals, analysts said Siemens is seeking to defend its products against lower-cost Chinese and east Asian competitors looking to undercut the industrial giant.
The lawsuits have also come a few months before the company is scheduled to sell off a majority stake in the world’s No. 2 maker of lighting technology, Osram Opto Semiconductors, which analysts think could be motivated by the desire to increase the manufacturer’s value before debuting on the public stock market in September. Osram is estimated to be worth between $7.3 and $8.7 billion according to The New York Times, and the sale should be one of the largest IPOs held in Germany in recent years.
