Berry is currently a partner at Duane Morris LLP, one of the largest law firms in the world. “We provide a high-quality work product to our clients, using creative approaches,” he explained. “ And [everyone here] is extremely ethical.”
His clients typically include individuals and companies embroiled in financial disputes in the areas of banking, real estate, insurance and re-insurance. All phases of the trial process are included in his repertoire: pre-trial motions, picking a jury, and convincing a jury at trial. “A lot of my work is motion practice work, the back and forth,” he said.
In cases involving large sums of money, a strong moral compass has been crucial. One of his most satisfying moments as an attorney was a pro-bono case involving civil rights liability. “A locality was trying to stifle a real estate developer,” he recalled. “The theory we followed was that under the local zoning regulations, he had a property right entitling him to develop. [The case involved] RICO counts against local officials. There was collusion between different aspects of government, and there was a blacklist. We won a $10.2 million verdict.”
Berry has always valued sound advice. One of his co-workers, Tom Anderson, once told him, “Know the rules and be prepared.’ I overcame the nervousness I felt in my first jury trial because I knew the law, the circumstances, the witnesses and the arguments.”
